Modeling may seem like a career dominated by females, but this does not mean that there are no men. Male models are vital in strutting male fashion on the catwalks. And just because they are fewer male models than women, it does not mean that they earn any less. Men’s fashion tends to cost much more than women’s; thus, the paycheck is really good. Being a male model does not by any means make you effeminate. Here are a few tips that could help you achieve your dream of becoming a male model.
Before venturing into the male modeling industry, you need to figure out if you fit into the standards. Generally, male models should be five feet and eleven inches tall or taller than that. You will also be expected that your weight does not exceed one hundred and seventy five pounds. You can be dropped by your agency if you violate this. Most male models will start their careers early; usually, from the age of 18. Do not worry though; you can still try your hand in a career in male modeling at 25. Some male models have even kept their career well past into their late thirties.
You will have to invest in having a portfolio done of yourself. This means that you should go to a professional studio and have your pictures taken. Doing this by yourself at home could result in a sloppy job and this will not help in launching your career. Professional shots will be much more flattering and thus will sell you to agencies and clients. Once you become established in the industry, your portfolio will be made up of pictures taken for certain jobs and campaigns. Remember your portfolio is your resume. It should be neat and presentable. Preferably a black book of folder that can hold your pictures securely protecting them from dirt and weathering.
Try to relocate to an area that is crawling with fashion shows. Trying to get into modeling in an area brimming with fashion increases your chances of breaking into the industry. The short fall of this is that you will run into a lot of competion but that should not deter you. If you are determined, you will get your break soon enough.
Ensure you attend all the auditions and casting calls that you can. This is when you get the opportunity to meet the clients and the big shots in the modeling industry. Be prepared to face a lot of rejection though. When rejected, be sure to ask for some constructive criticism so that you may better yourself. Do not be discouraged though. Do your best at every audition and try your best to make an impression. You never know; the casting agents may remember you at a later date for a job better suited to you.
You could also consider getting an agent for yourself. They may be a tad pricey but an agent will try to get you as many jobs as they can.
