Are you considering a career in modeling? While there is a lot more involved in this endeavor (which they generally fail to show you on television), there are a few simple steps you can take that can form the foundation of a great model. Some are obvious, while others are a bit less obvious. I hope this helps.

One fact that all aspiring models should keep in mind is that modeling is a career… a hard-working, highly competitive career with no room for laziness. If you think that you can get by on looks alone, you are in for a rather extreme wake-up call. While a pretty face and great body are certainly staples in this business, how you use that face and body makes all the difference. And this requires that you use that thing between your ears.

In fact, anyone who believes that modeling is a mindless profession likely wouldn’t be able to trade a day with a model. They’re simply not smart enough. You need to be fully aware of your presence at all times. What are you doing with your eyes? What about your arms, lips, knees, hips, and tummy? You have to know what every square inch of your physical body is doing, as well as the “psychic vibes” you are omitting.

Remember, you are competing with thousand of other girls (or guys, if you happen to be a gentleman) and every little detail counts. Talk about multi-tasking! This requires a ton of study, practice, and experience. And even the best in the world get it wrong sometimes! But when it comes down to it, you’d better get it as right as possible as often as possible. Let’s not forget that this is a job, subject to the same rules as any other. Firings do happen, so be sure to bring your A-game.

This applies to modeling in general, though there are many different types of modeling you may be interested in. Some are less competitive than others, so if you want to get your foot in the door (literally, if you plan to become a foot model!), then you may want to look at all of the various types of modeling opportunities available to you. Among others, you can do runway, magazine, face, leg, hand, jean, face, plus size, and hair modeling. There are as many kinds of modeling as there are products to promote.

Above all else, treat yourself kindly. Too many would-be models have gone down the dangerous path of starvation diets, laxatives and/or speed pills, and eating disorders to become thin. Healthy weight management and body sculpting is wonderful. Just know your body’s limits, and respect them. No career is worth sacrificing your health for.
